The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of the October 2023 wage awards, as confirmed by Federal Civil Servants on Thursday night. This comes after a temporary suspension of payment that lasted for several months.
It is worth noting that the N35,000 wage award was agreed upon between the Federal Government and Organized Labour. This agreement was part of the measures taken to alleviate the impact of removing the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol.
President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day speech, had announced a wage award of N25,000 for “low-grade workers” in the Federal Civil Service. Following discussions with organized labor unions, this amount was subsequently increased to N35,000. A memorandum signed by Ekpo Nta, the Chairman of the National Salaries, Wages, and Income Commission, outlined that the implementation of the wage award would commence from September 1, 2023.
