Kenya Loses Six Police Personnel in Ambush Near Somalia

Six police personnel in North-East Kenya have been killed after assailants attacked a base near the border with Somalia.

According to a regional official, no group has claimed responsibility. Meanwhile, Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo informed newsmen that the attack followed a pattern of raids by the Somali-based Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Mwabudzo reported that the officers were ambushed yesterday while they were preparing for their morning prayers, and four officers were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Recall that Al-Shabab frequently mounts cross-border attacks in the area, targeting both the Kenyan military and civilian populations. The group has waged a brutal insurgency against Somalia’s government for nearly 20 years.
