Nigeria Approves N5 Billion for Research Funding, Aims to Tackle National Challenges

The Nigerian government has approved a N5 billion investment in research activities for 2024, aimed at addressing key national challenges.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this announcement during the launch of the 2024 TETFund National Research Fair and Exhibition in Abuja today.

The funding, managed by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), will support research in public tertiary institutions to find solutions to issues such as youth underemployment, insecurity, and infrastructure decay.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the research fund aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes local research and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth.

He noted that, much like in other countries, Nigeria’s economic advancement relies on harnessing the outputs of research and technological advancements.

The fair, which will run through the week, aims to foster collaboration among research agencies and boost the application of research toward nation-building.
