President Bola Tinubu has settled the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, affirming Mudashiru Obasa’s return as Speaker despite an earlier recommendation for his resignation.
The resolution followed a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, where all 40 lawmakers were in attendance.
President Tinubu’s decision overruled the recommendations of a panel led by former governors Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, which had advised that Obasa step down after his reinstatement.
Obasa had been impeached on January 13, 2025, by 35 lawmakers over allegations of financial misappropriation and authoritarian leadership, leading to Mojisola Meranda’s brief tenure as Speaker before she resigned under pressure.
The panel had initially proposed a transition plan, allowing Obasa’s return on the condition that he later step down for a Speaker from Lagos West, but he instead adjourned the Assembly indefinitely.
A Presidency official disclosed that President Tinubu had instructed lawmakers to cooperate with Obasa while also directing the Speaker to withdraw his court case challenging his impeachment.
