Sudan Proposes Transitional Election Plan Amid Civil War

Sudan’s foreign ministry, aligned with the army, has put forward a strategy for holding elections, which includes forming a transitional government, appointing a civilian prime minister, and initiating a national dialogue with civil society.

Military leader Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan stated that the proposed roadmap envisions a constitutional transition and the eventual conduct of free elections, with all major factions and conflicting parties involved in the dialogue.

The country has been in crisis since April last year, when tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces escalated into full-blown conflict.

During a summit in Cairo, Burhan reaffirmed Sudan’s support for Arab-led reconstruction efforts in Gaza and the Palestinian cause.

He rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from their homeland, warning that such actions threaten regional and global stability.

The summit saw Arab leaders endorse Egypt’s $53 billion post-war plan for Gaza, which directly countered former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to depopulate the area.

While Hamas welcomed the summit’s outcomes, Israel dismissed them, and the Trump administration responded with little enthusiasm.
