THE BOOK TITLED BIOGRAPHY OF A MEDIA ICON SCHEDULED TO HOLD AT MAUVE 21 EVENTS CENTRE,RING-ROAD,IBADAN ON

First and foremost,on behalf of Aare Afe Babalola,SAN,I wish to tender his unreserved apologies for being unavoidably absent at this book launch due to several pressing schedule at the Afe Babalola University,Ado-Ekiti.

We all know that His Excellency,Ambassador (Dr.)Yemi Farounbi,in whose  honour we are gathered here,is a veteran who has traversed the length and breadth of the media world.A prolific writer,film and television producer of numerous  credits,His  Excellency’s  name  is  on  the  credit  line  of  critically acclaimed productions like Iwa and Agbaarin as producer.He also produced  and funded the two-part Yoruba movies Yapon Yarin as well as Arelu and Igba  Oro.As a writer,he has authored a number of stories and articles for several  news  outlets  such  as  Owena  News,Sunday  Sketch,Sunday  Tribune,and  Saturday Tribune where he remains a guest columnist till date.

He  was   instrumental  to  the   establishment   of  BCOS   -TV   Ibadan,His Excellency was at a time the Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Broadcasting;Chairman,Directorate   of   Information,Oyo    State;Chairman, Visitation  Panel  of  the  University  of  Benin;a  one-time  member  of  the Governing Council of the Yaba College of Technology;member,Governing Council of Lead City University;Chairman,Daily Times of Nigeria and is currently,the  Chairman,Osun  State  Broadcasting  Corporation.

In   the   mass   media,his  primary   constituency,where   he   is   a   doyen,the  achievements  of  His  Excellency  are  unrivalled.In  administration,he  is  an administrator  par  excellence.In  politics,he  has  carved  a  niche  for  himself. Knowledge wise,he is very informed.His Excellency is a man from whose pool of knowledge and wisdom,people long to drink.

I will pause the adulation for now,so we can all reflect and draw valuable lessons from the life and achievements of this great man,while relating them to the current state of our society.

Please permit me to begin with His Excellency’s immediate constituency,the journalism   profession.

Over   the   years,standards    have   drastically    dropped   in   the   journalism profession,as is the case with almost every sphere of life in Nigeria.The true

Wstate of journalism today cannot be compared to the manner in which His Excellency and his peers practiced the profession without fear and bias.One wonders if we would be at this book launch today had His Excellency not  devoted his life to hard work and an impeccable practice of his profession.I  am issuing a rallying call to media and journalism practitioners,as well as  our youth to rise up to the occasion,that the labour of our heroes such as  His Excellency will not be in vain.

In  order  not   to  be   accused  of  bias,I  will  talk  briefly   about  my   own constituency,justice delivery system in Nigeria today.A lot is in the public space about the slow pace of justice delivery and allegations of corruption of judicial officers.There are so many factors responsible for the slow pace of justice delivery in Nigeria today.Among them are inadequate infrastructural  facilities,litigants’unwillingness  to  prosecute  their  cases  as  expected  and  indolent by a few judicial officers.As regards corruption,I am of the opinion  that corruption is not as prevalent as is being reported in the media.Most of  the judges are upright,although we cannot rule out a few bad eggs among   them.To improve the state of justice delivery requires efforts and cooperation   of not only the government but all of us.This is a wakeup call for all of us to    do our part.For example,the giver of bribe  should  stop enticing judicial    officers  with  bribe  while  the  taker  should  also  desist  from  doing  so.

Government should invest massively in the infrastructural facilities.

The various levels of government in the country are also urged to consider the plight of the populace and govern with purpose,integrity,and a passion to serve.Nigeria is a country with so many potentials and it is only when we have harnessed these potentials to build a better society that we can gallantly say we are one nation bound in freedom,peace,and unity.

In conclusion,we appreciate the contribution of His Excellency Ambassador (Dr.)Yemi Farounbi to the growth and development of his profession and the wider society.I am confident that the solid foundation already laid by His Excellency   will    stand   upcoming   journalists,media    practitioners   and stakeholders in good stead as Nigerians continue to hope for a return to the good old days.
