The Federal Government has revealed plans to integrate over 20 per cent of unbanked Nigerians into the banking system.
Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed the information today at the beginning of a two-day National Stakeholders’ Workshop on Economic and Financial Inclusion.
According to the vice president, at least, over 20 per cent of Nigerians are currently excluded financially. He added that the government is planning to reduce the number to a minimum of five per cent.
At the event, the 14th Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank, Sanusi Lamido, said banditry and other security challenges in Nigeria can be attributed largely to financial exclusion. as many rural dwellers have no access to efficient payment systems.
It would be recalled that the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, disclosed that the Federal Government is set to tackle poverty and insecurity across the country through financial inclusion for all Nigerians.
Federal Government to Open Access to Consumer Credit with N100b
Federal Government has rolled out a Consumer Credit Scheme to boost manufacturing and stimulate economic growth.
Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, yesterday announced that the scheme will commence following its approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Ngelale, the project include empowering Nigerians to improve their quality of life and access to goods and services, offering credit guarantees and wholesale lending to financial institutions dedicated to broadening consumer credit access, and promoting responsible consumer credit as a pathway to an improved quality of life.
Reports revealed that the first phase of the programme will be available to civil servants before its extension to other Nigerians.
