A somber incident unfolded in Kwahaslalek village in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, where assailants carried out an attack resulting in the unfortunate loss of at least 30 lives, predominantly children and women. The distressing event occurred on a Tuesday night during a government-imposed curfew, catching residents gathered at a compound. The impact of the violence extended to neighboring communities, Kinat and Mairana, situated on the borders of Mangu and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
Joseph Gwankat, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, verified the incident, highlighting the destruction of houses and property during the attack. The assailants also targeted Sabon-Gari and Mangu, causing concern in these communities. DSP Alfred Alabo, leading the police response, confirmed the attack on Kwahaslalek village and reported the burning of the market and worship centers in Mangu town. Ongoing investigations were still underway to determine casualty figures and assess the full extent of the damage.
Despite the challenging situation, DSP Alfred Alabo aimed to reassure the public, emphasizing the gradual return to normalcy in Mangu due to the deployment of security personnel and a surveillance helicopter. However, it’s noteworthy that the government’s decision to maintain a 24-hour curfew on Mangu Local Government Area reflects the seriousness of the security concerns and underscores the need for prompt measures to address the ongoing crisis in the region.
