The Taraba State Government has announced its intention to reintroduce history as a subject in the basic education curriculum for schools in the state. Governor Agbu Kefas revealed this during a dinner with journalists in Jalingo on Sunday. History was removed from the primary and secondary education curriculum in the 2009/2010 academic session.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Governor Kefas emphasized the importance of history in the development of society, stating that no society can truly progress without its inhabitants having a good knowledge of their history. The reintroduction aims to lay a solid foundation for accelerated development.
The governor also outlined plans to enhance the quality of education, stating that primary school teachers must be first-degree holders, and secondary school teachers must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in no distant time.
He urged journalists to monitor the implementation of the state government’s free education policy in primary and secondary schools to ensure proper execution. Governor Kefas commended journalists for their objective reportage and pledged to renovate the Press Centre in Jalingo and provide operational vehicles to various groups under the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Former Taraba Commissioner for Information, Mr. Danjuma Adamu, emphasized the need to see journalists as partners in progress, while Commissioner for Information Hajiya Zainab Jalingo called for continued collaboration to better serve the people. Taraba NUJ Chairman Matthew Jen and the state NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman Gabriel Yough assured the governor of continued objective reportage for the benefit of all.
